PATRIOTISM: A LOST VIRTUE IN CAMEROUN

There is absolutely no gainsaying that patriotism is a commodity almost out of sight in Cameroon. From the first citizen in the highest of national classical strata, to the last in the worst of slumps in the country, the element of patriotism may only be seen probably with ‘the use of an electron microscope’. Gone are those days when patriotism used to be a lifestyle of the people of this supposed great nation; when almost all used to be very proud of Cameroon; when children, youths and the old alike used to have reasons to hit their chests and say Cameroon is my country.

Judging patriotism from the prism of mere recital of the national anthem or supposed flaunting of the national colours, can only be considered an under sight, as patriotism goes by far beyond that. Many profess it by word of mouth and think it suffices, but yet, the big question should be; what does patriotism entails?, in other words, who is a patriot?. Seriously, who in this country can pass for a patriot?, when almost all sideline patriotic acts for egoistic reasons. The entire nation has gone to a level where almost no one seem to be working for the good of the people and the nation. ‘The Social Compact’ in the ‘Social Contract’ as prescribed by the famous 18th century French philosopher- J.J Rousseau is as well absent in Cameroon. A patriotic person would do anything for his/her country in order for it to grow better and better, where as, one with the absence of the same would work so much so that the country is brought to its knees.

As it stands, one cannot say with exactitude who among the more than 20 million is patriotic, especially as all sectors of the country are awash with acts of the contrary of patriotism. In Biblical, as well as in conventional logic, being exemplary is a virtue in itself; but then, the scenario in Cameroon seem very much the opposite. The people at the helm of others in this country lack the element of patriotism, yet expecting its availability from their counterparts at the foot of the governance ladder. The congregation; at least for those with limited knowledge of their stance in Christ, will definitely slip off the track should the same man (the pastor) who gives them directives on how to live in Christ is rather seen practicing a magnificent opposite.

What do we call patriotism?, is it when astronomical sums of state money are swindled into personal purses?, is it when contracts of state interest are fraudulently awarded to unscrupulous contractors?, is it when everyone in a position of power endeavours to involve only relatives in government positions?, is it when one group of people in the same country are alienably treated? Oh! May be it’s when people with responsibility of defending national colours refused to do so unless colossal sums of money are pushed into their bank accounts.

Talking of the feasibility of a patriotic Cameroonian is almost out of place, because there seem to be none.

Patriots existed in the pre-independent days- diehards in the likes of Felix Roland Mummie, the diehard ‘Indomitable Lions’ of the yesteryears- Albert Roger Milla, Omam Biyick, Patrick Mboma, Rigobert Song, Mac Vivien Foe etc, who were unlike the money questers of today, who still fail to deliver the goods even after getting their quest, and perhaps presently may just be good enough to be labelled ‘The domitable Ducks of Cameroon’
